Password Requirements

This article covers Causey's password requirements. In order to keep you safe we have two simply stated, but perhaps a bit confusing at first requirements.

  1. Your password must be at least 12 characters
  2. Your password must be a Strong Password

What is a Strong Password?

Strong Password ensures that your password is strong enough to resist attacks by measuring how complex and unpredictable it is. Here's how we do it:

  1. Character Variety: We check if your password uses a mix of uppercase, lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters. The more variety, the stronger your password.
  2. Length: Longer passwords are harder to guess. We give more credit for longer passwords.
  3. Avoiding Common Patterns: Our system recognizes and reduces strength for easy-to-guess patterns like "123456" or "qwerty". It also catches common tricks like replacing letters with numbers (e.g., "p4ssw0rd" for "password").
  4. Repeated Characters: If you use the same character multiple times, we lower the strength since repeating letters or numbers makes passwords easier to guess.
  5. Common Words: We compare your password to a list of common words and passwords (like "password" or "admin") to ensure it's not easily guessable.

Our goal is to ensure that your password isn't just long but also hard to predict, making it much safer from hackers.

Tip: Consider using a password manager like 1Password or LastPass to create and store strong, unique passwords for all your accounts.
